Setting goals and taking action
Hi,
What an experience, I’ve spent the past few days setting my goals and formulating a plan to take me from where I am now to where I want to be in the next 12 months and it feels great.
I can’t explain how good it feels to be able to look at my plan and know exactly what I have to do and by when to achieve my goals.
Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t easy.
I personally found it really hard to know where to start so I procrastinated for a day or two (I’m sure you’ve done this occasionally) while fooling myself into believing that I was making headway when really I was just going round in circles not knowing where to start.
So how did I overcome this obstacle?
Well it was easy - I took action.
My biggest desire (goal) is to create an online presence that will allow me to work from home so I started with that one goal and just brain dumped. I wrote everything down on paper, it wasn’t in any particular order I just got all my thoughts out of my head and on to paper.
I was amazed to see how much I wanted to achieve in my life and once it was all in black and white it was then a straight forward but exciting process breaking things down and creating a plan.
I am very happy to say that I am starting this week with a plan I have my week mapped out and know exactly what I need to do success is on the horizon and I have a step by step map to show me how to get there.
I’m really excited to be starting this journey (and a little scared). I’m sure it’s going to be tough and they’ll be times when I feel like giving up but I know in my heart as long as I take action and follow my plan on a daily basis to keep moving forward I can’t fail to achieve my goals.
Planning doesn’t only apply when creating a business it helps in any area of your life, so take some time today and create a plan it could be a day out,a trip to the dentist, next years summer holiday, redecorating the spare bedroom it doesn’t matter what it is, you’re guaranteed to be successful if you have a plan.
I’m planning to check out 100 blogs over the next fortnight and improve my writing skills – what have you got planned?
Leave a comment below I’d love to know your plans, or if you need any help setting them just let me know.
There is enough success to go round here’s to your’s
Michelle xx

Michelle,
I am so happy for you!!!!
The experience you shared here may look obvious to most, yet is the obviously simple stuff that a lot of people overlooked, even the smart one, because they think that they are….well, smart to keep everything in their head.
I don’t see myself smart but I made that mistake. If only I realize the power of putting down my plan as early as you.
But that is all in the past!!
WIth a Goal Oriented Plan at hand, you already won half the race. Now is time for some Real Action, Michelle. There may still be hurdles and distraction ahead, but now you have a “COMPASS” which will help you to maneuver better and overcome obstacles faster.
Congratulations!

Hi Jason,
Thanks for your encouragement and support it keeps me motivated.
You’re so right, now I have a written plan I can see what I need to do and although my daily plan will change with time as I learn to incorporate new things this will only aide my speed to achieving my goals.
I’m so grateful that Alex focused on the importance of having a plan right at the start, it really makes getting the results you want so much easier
I’ve just got to stick to it now and take daily action

Hi Michelle, goal setting is so very important. My goal for the next two weeks is to continue to keep track of who has commented in the challenge and how people are doing generally with their goal to visit the 100 blogs. A short term goal, but an important one.
Enjoy the journey.

I’m loving blog hopping the quality of information is fantastic, I’m learning so much more (and quicker) than I would of without it.

Taking action has always been the hardest part for me. I can plan and plan until the cows come home, but taking that first step was so scary. Now, with a coach of my own, I am taking steps I never even knew I was capable of.
You should be proud of yourself for having the strength and the courage to move beyond planning to action.

Nice to meet you, I completely agree having a coach makes all the difference. I’m fortunate enough to have Alex Jefferys for my mentor ( my only regret is waiting so long before the penny dropped) and I finally feel like I have the whole jigsaw and not just a few pieces Congratulations to you for taking action.
I must admit I am having to carry my to do list over but i’ll get better at estimating timescales as I progress (hopefully).

Hi, Michelle,
Glad to meet you.
You are completely right about needing a plan to succeed! We wouldn’t leave on a road trip w/o directions. A plan makes the steps clearer. Won’t it be great in a year
from now to look back at our plans and see how far we have come, not to mention all we have accomplished?
Cheers for daily action!

Hi Michele,
Good to meet you here on the 100 post challenge.
We do tend to put off writing our goals…took me quite a while.
Did not believe I needed to see them in black and white….
cause I had them in my head.
There is something magic about seeing them on paper.
Great post.

Hi Bryan,
It’s great to meet you also the challenge is a really great way to connect with others, It’sgreat that were all aiming for the same ultimate goal.
Like you I put off writting my goals down for years (big mistake), I think for me it was more the fear that once they were on paper it gave others the chance to pull them apart so they were much safer in my head (if you know what I mean). I now realise that by writing them down others can help guide you and advise where and what shortcuts can be made to make the journey easier.
I’m loving this journey so far

Hi Michelle,
what a fantastic start you have made, well done.
You now have a clear path of where you want to go and more importantly a great mentor in alex to help you to get there.
Next comes the scarey part……………..putting your steps to your goals into ACTION.
and that is where life stars to throw the curved balls at you!
So I wish you the best of luck, use all the resources you have available to you including online friends etc, write your goals down and have them in front of you at all times and what about using your ‘about’ page to set them down and mark your progress?
err, this last i haven’t done …..yet…..but this challenge is giving me the push I need.
will return soon as looking forward to watching your progress.
all the best.

Hey Michelle, Excellent post on very important topic. Planning and goal setting it seems to be something that tends to be dreaded by most and I must admit me included. What you have said makes a lot of sense and its amazing what we can come up if we make the effort to get it down on paper. I think another equally important ingredient in success is teaming up with a caoch or mentor, some one we can bounce ideas off and also some one that keeps us accountable for the goals that we set for ourselves. The points that you raised are an important reminder for us all. Good luck with the Challenge.

Hi Michelle,
Great job! Did you know that you are in an elite group now?
I have something I want to share with you.
`Check this out. The following is from a book by Charles J Givens called SuperSelf:
A study of university business school graduates who had been out of school for 10 years was conducted to determine how they were progressing toward their goals. Amazingly, 83 percent of the graduates had set no goals at all. This 83 percent reported that they were working hard and staying busy but had no specific future plans. Another 14 percent had goals, but their goals were mental and not written. However, this 14 percent was earning on average three times the income of those who had no goals at all. Only 3 percent of the entire group had written goals. That 3% was earning a whopping ten times what those with no goals were earning.
Welcome to the 3% club Michelle. You’re going places.
Good luck in the 100 comment challenge and with your online business.

Taking action is what a lot of people don’t do. It is one of the biggest keys to success. It certainly unclutters your mind when you do a brain dump because you don’t have to waste energy keeping it in your thoughts. You can then use that energy for concentrating on your daily tasks.
Good luck with it all Michelle.

For me doing my brain dump was so refreshing, I went from being totally stuck not knowing where to start to having a full 12-month working plan in no time at all and as for uncluttering my mind you’re absolutely right everything just seemed to become clear, the plan almost formulated itself. It is so much easier focusing on one task at a time rather than trying to tackle the whole thing in one go.
I’d definitely recommend it to anyone.
Enjoy the challenge

Your writing skills WILL improve Michelle, and this 100 comment challenge should give it a good kick start.
The challenge has already made me take the next step on my Internet Marketing journey. I have concentrated on my blog for the past year, but after reading a post on article writing, I submitted one to Ezine last week – and it was approved.
I may start my eBook before the year is out. My writing skills were a bit rusty so I originally thought this wouldn’t happen until 2011. As you said, I have a step by step plan, but they are very long steps!
(I’m in no rush – the Internet won’t go away).
I’m comfortable with long term plans. I have been running marathons for the past 20 years, and it’s not possible to have a good marathon without lots and lots of hard training. I have just completed my third 20 mile run, and that’s for the Brighton Marathon in April 2011.
Good luck with the challenge Michelle.

So glad that your have decided to write out your plans/goals for the next 12 months, congratulations. Have you written out any plans for 2 years or 5 years – that sounds scary doesn’t it.
One thing I would suggest, if you haven’t already, is to put a date on your plans/goals. With a date, you have a more definite need to complete the goal. I read somewhere that a goal without a date is a dream.
Now I am off to write my goals, thanks for making me realise that it is something I need to do ASAP.

Hi Michelle,
Having a plan is great. If you have indeed mastered the planning process then all you have to do is follow through on your plan.
Some people, including me, tend to resist planning because it seems to take spontaneity out of life.
But it’s not a way to go. Planning what needs to be done in order to succeed is crucial.
Spontaneity has it’s place and I wouldn’t recommend planning every minute of a person’s life.
When it comes to work though it needs to be planned and organized.

Hi Michelle, You’re right on target – plan and take action, step by step, row by row, we’re gonna make this garden grow. The list of things to do as an online marketer has no end so it’s a must to put some serious order into that list and do the things that you’ve prioritized and ignore the tug and tow demands from the many things yet undone. Planning and taking deliberate action is really one of the most important skills we have and the longer we keep at it the more effective we become. It’s an amazing journey, long and arduous, and rewarding for anyone who’s in it to win it. Be well, Steve D.

I love your step by step , row by row, we’re going to make this garden grow – staying on those lines.
The beauty of having Alex Jeffreys as my mentor is I now know I can’t just throw seeds on the ground and hope they grow, to ensure they grow I have to till the soil and prepare the ground before planting and the water and nurture them untill they’re ripe.
Creating a plan has shown what the fruit will look like before It’s even planted and as long as I stay focused there’ll be a harvest to reap .

There are some amazing blogs that have joined in the challenge full of content and information.
Good luck with the challenge side of things. I do hope everyone honours their commitment to it and does the best they can. I feel like a school teacher again going around and marking off people’s comments!
Make sure you check your spam folder because a lot of people have found people’s comments in there.

I’m loving it though and I’ve learn’t so much not only from the blog posts themselves but also from all the comments that have been left on each site. I thought it would take approx 10 – 15 mins per blog but the content is so great It’s taking me more like 60 – 90 mins per site. Not to worry though I am on track and will have coomented on all 101 blogs by the 31st of August ( I may not have slept but I will of completed the challenge).
I must admit it has put back my original plans but it’s my first big goal and I am determined to complete it on schedule.
Up to now there haven’t been any comments stuck in my spambox but I’ll keep my eye on it.
The whiteboard sounds like a great idea, thanks, not only will it make it easier for me but the rest of the family will also be able to see what needs to be done and by when. It might even encourage them to leave me alone to get on with it instead of interupting all the time LOL.
Have you tried mind movies? I’ve created my first and have it running in the background while I’m working, even though I don’t notice it I think it is having the desired effect.
Loving the challenge – Talk soon

Great job Michelle,
This is just the kind of action I try to promote on my blog.
Clearly stating your goals, dreams and desires from there making plans and most importantly taking action.
Keep this up and stick to your plan (but don’t be afraid to alter the plans) and I am sure you will do really well.
Good luck to you!

Thanks for your encouragement, I think I’ll be a regular visitor to your site.
I’m finding alterations being made all the time at the moment but I’m hoping this

Hi Amy,
Thanks for stopping by, it’s good know you.
Unfortunately most people just drift through life dreaming of something better and complainingabout their lot.
When you have a plan you can change things and turn dreams into a reality by taking action and moving towards your goals on a daily basis.

Hi Michelle,
I have to admit I find it difficult to stick to daily goals, life tends to get in the way.
However I don’t deny the sense in trying to achieve them, I just have to adjust them continually, which isn’t a problem, they still remain goals.
My particular long term goal isn’t that great – I just want an income to pay for my many holidays.
Best of luck with your own goals and I am sure you will achieve them.

Hi Bill,
Oh life you’re so right it is always getting in the way.
When I create my daily to do list I try to incorporate normal things such as meals , housework a little chill time etc into my plans. I must admit there have been a few 3am bedtimes trying to complete my daily tasks but on the whole I’m finding that by adding none business tasks incorporates life into my plan rather than it getting in the way of them.

Hi Michelle,
isn’t it wonderful to have a plan – that saves a lot of thinking in my opinion, as well as a lot of time. You just follow your list of to do items!
My plan for the early part of the week is to visit the remaining blogs in the 100 comment challenge. Not sure if I can do it in the next two days, but I do plan to get it done no matter what!

Hi Gwen,
Wonderful is definitely the way it feels when your working to a plan.
Like you my plan was to visit all 100 blogs in the challenge, I’ve had a couple of 3am bedtimes but I was determined to complete it.
I’ve now successfully completed the challenge with a full day to spare (Yahoo).
Good luck with the challenge, you’ll feel so good when you have completed it just stick to your plan.

Hi Michelle
Nice to meet you. I like the plan idea. I learned so much through this challenge that I have to let my brain unscramble and feel what is the next best step. So many options. So much new material that I had never heard of. I did a quick online course and it was good, but this was better.
I just wanted to pass along a tip I learned about how to set up wordpress. I noticed you have page numbers. Search engines don’t comprehend these and like words. If you go to Settings/Permalinks and then Common Settings down to Custom Structure and insert /%postname%/ this will use the postname as the page name and you can use it for better SEO. Any internal links that you made with the numbers will have to be changed by you. Search engines now see your site name and then dead end on the page number. Change this and they will see your site name AND your post name. Holler back if that’s not clear.
Thanks.
Alex

Hi Alex,
It’s nice to meet you to, the challenge has been amazing. I like yourself have learned so much and meet so many wonderful people it has been a massive learning curve.
Fortunately I have Alex Jeffreys as a mentor which is great in itself but the big plus is the members forum. It’s crammed with fantastic people all willing to help, advise, guide and motivate. Succeeding as part of a team is so much easier and more rewarding than trying to do it on your own.
If you don’t currently have a mentor check out Alex Jeffreys you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks for the tip on SEO, I will change the permalinks after the challenge, I did change them earlier in the month but unfortunately it broke the link to my post so I had to change it back.
Enjoy the journey – To your success

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for sharing this post with us. It is very true that you mention ” So how did I overcome this obstacle? Well it was easy – I took action.” Sometimes I could have all the plans all over my head, but when I decided to take action, the result became so different from what I plan at first place. Because I have to adapt and change as part of my plan simply don’t work. Sticking to the plan is very important but but flexibility is also one of the factors we should consider as a whole.
Talk soon.

Hi Connie,
You’re so right, once your plan is down on paper it needs to be treated as a live document.
When you first create a plan you may not know all that needs to be done so changes need to be made enroute as you learn quicker, easier or more viable ways to get to where you want to be.
The main thing is having a plan and taking action one step at a time. Congratulation to you for creating yours.
Great to meet you as part of the challenge.

Your quest to set goals and follow them up is a milestone in most of our lives. Getting and holding on to our dreams and goals goes hand & hand with being in great Body, Mind & Spiritual awareness of oneself.
Putting them on paper for all to see, like you are doing here, is accepting that you are part of the Law of Attraction. The universe will bring all you desire, as long as you take action and listen to your heart.

Hi Michelle
First – congratulations that you’ve got your plan in place .. this is one of the hardest parts to be done initially … guilty of procrastinating for weeks .. but now have started taking action and making a plan. Though the plan it not complete, I have some short term goals .. one of which was to take action and complete the task at hand with all my focus on it. So I registered for a giveway event and now the 100 blog comment challenge … I guess what I’m almost completing this as well
Cheers!

I would definetley recommend a plan of action to take you were you want to go. I always made a weekly plan of what I wanted to achieve and the steps I needed to take. Now I’m on a monthly plan and I can see exactly what I need to do for the month ahead.
Really enjoyed your post and I’ll pop back for more

Hi Michelle,
Thank you for reminding me of the importance of making plans.
If you set these goals and get them down on paper, you will have something to keep referring to in order to map your progress. You can then keep updating and tweaking them along the way to success.
Well done Michelle for making plans and taking action.

WELL DONE !
I think you should give yourself a big massive pat on the back for consistently taking action and striding forwards towards your goals.
No one can make you do anything online, you took it upon yourself to change your life and you are reaping the rewards now,
More people should approach their online business like you.
I could probably take a leaf or two out your book too if I am honest.
But my planning skills are getting better, I am also keeping a journal and I agree, it;s amazing to see how far you have come, inspires you to keep going.
Good luck with your future ventures, if you approach them in the same way success should just be around the corner,

You are right about goals. I need to do a better job of writing them down. Right now, my short term goal is to do twenty blog hops before the bewitching hour to complete this 100 blog marathon. I may have missed a couple from internet glitches, But I think I will have hit them all with these next 20.
Good luck and glad to know ya.

Hi Michelle,
I love brain dumping each week. At least I can see what I’ve achieved from the previous plans and what needs to be done within the coming week. Thus, progression is really important if you want to get ahead online or off for that matter. Planning is one step but understanding your short-term goals to get there is much more important. Thanks for sharing this post with us.
I’ll see you beyond the 100th comment!

Hi Michelle, it is definitely an advantage to have a plan/goal. It helps direct energy and resources into those things that matter the most, assuming your goals are aligned with your long term visions and values. It is important to write them down too so that when you get a little foggy about the details a quick glance at the whiteboard/noticeboard helps get you back on track.

Hi Michelle,
Setting goals is not that hard. Taking action is the hard part! Unfortunately most people stop or procrastinate because they don’t see the wanted results (goal) right away. It can take months or YEARS to complete a goal.
What I do is setting short term goals (daily-weekly goals) and long term goals (monthly-yearly). By setting only long term goals you will procrastinate and feel disappointed when you don’t achieve the goal eg. Make $100,0000.
Anyway my current most important short-term (plan) is to finish editing my video course series.
I have to go back to work now.
Take care,
Andreas

Way to go – as you rightly say the key is to take action and get started!
Its easy to procrastinate and fool yourself into thinking you are moving forwards – heck we all do it and I’m sure many of the “big names” have been through the same thing. I’m re-focusing on mine at the moment as lost my way a bit but will get the enthusiasm and focus back again!!
What I would recommend is that you post some of your goals as you can then be held accountable and also blog about your progress – will be great to see how you’re getting on!! All the best

Hi Michelle,
I have finally made a plan and today am gonna break down what I need to do daily to make this plan come to fruition! Isn’t it funny how much we learn when we step away from the computer and write it all down??
I too have been going around in circles and it’s time to stop that! Nothing is ever gonna come of it. Although twitter, facebook and blog hopping are fun….they don’t get me anywhere!
I would love to see your plan. Email me if you like. I like to see examples and what other people are doing to make their online biz a success…without all the hype!
Thanks for this post. I needed to get back on track.
I wish you well and God bless!!

You may have not intended to do so, but I think you’ve managed to express the state of mind that a lot of individuals are in. The sense of wanting to assist, but not knowing how or wherever, is something a lot of us are going through.
